The DFG funded metrics project has developed a deeper understanding of altmetrics and their perception amongst researchers. Understanding and using metrics is not simple, especially as context, patterns and openness emerge. A detailed analysis reveals key issues such as the need for full transparency, and systematic training around the topic.
